Yes it's been bad. The drought has been a factor as it always is but also the retail downturn.

They've got a new investor presentation out today with some interesting figures. I was surprised to see that parts had in underlying terms (whatever that means) had been equal to trailers in revenue. They certainly have an impressive parts distribution setup.

I bought quite a few over recent months. I don't know that they've ever been quite this low but I do know that over the 15 years I have been buying & selling them, they have always come up from the bottom. So I'm holding with some medium term confidence.

Seems to be going gangbusters now.

In the period 2004-14 I made a series of good profits but I got bushwhacked in 2015 and swore I'd never touch it again.

But lo & behold earlier this year I was tempted and so far so more than good.

I can't honestly remember if I dipped my toe in this nipper, but if I did I think I probably pulled it out pretty damn quick.

But there are probably some who don't remember or never knew the hassles.

There is only one useful government intervention and that is "real" investment, in the form of long term

benefit public works paid for through long-term borrowing. All just imo.

Re your feedback to the ABC, you must have missed the implied small print about negative comments not being welcome.

But seriously, I generally get a response to feedback on ABC podcasts, but then my feedback has generally been of a positive suggestive kind (that probably needs rephrasing). I am also a fairly regular reader of ABC news on my phone (a) because it's free and (b) because it's always advisable to keep an eye on enemy movements.

I wouldn't mind having a bet that Aldi's profit is greater off its lower base than Woolies. But we don't get to see Aldi's figures as far as I know.

Maybe you're right. On the other hand I often go into Woolies, any day of the week, for those impulse needs, and it's always reasonably busy.

Getting out is the hard part, with the checkouts usually occupied by the full basket people and the robots queued up.

My bro-in-law has twice been bitten by brown snakes (Cowra NSW). He almost didn't make it the second time.

And yet here I am, on a wooded acreage, and in 30 odd years I've only seen one small black snake.

(But maybe they've seen me)

My instinct is there's something wrong with this: "Why can't so many children read?"

But I can only make it OK for me by changing the structure eg Why is it that so many children can't read?

Trust BBC English? Nope.

It didn't work out (another one) and from what you say it still isn't.

Market conditions have changed since this was last discussed. But I remain optimistic about the fundamentals here in spite of the negativity in the housing market. They are in the segment of the market that won't disappear even if it stalls for a while.

Tim Boreham had this to say in the ShareCafe briefing:

"For those with a bent for more permanent accommodation, shares in Queensland based home builder Villa World (VLW, $1.81) have lost 36 percent of their value over the last year.

In December Villa World withdrew its guidance of current year earnings of $40 million and didn’t provide any update. That’s as ominous as a black cat walking under a ladder on Friday the 13th.

The company had stuck by that guidance at its mid-November AGM, which shows just how much the residential housing market has deteriorated. Villa World’s problem, in particular, is the reduced availability of finance for home buyers.

There’s always an ‘however’, however, and the company still expects to report a first profit of $16-17m next month, with an eight cents a share franked dividend.

Assuming a full year profit of $29m and a 12.5c a share full-year div – as broker Baillieu does – and Villa World is trading on a multiple of seven times earnings and on a 7.4 percent yield."

I've been making critical comments for quite a long time in various places about Elon Musk.
His type of entrepreneurship imo is not helping at all in the struggle against those who want to destroy a fair free market system.
But he's not Robinson Crusoe.

The cost of being Coles:

"Coles accounted for about 60% of Wesfarmers’ capital employed and 34% of divisional earnings."....

"Seeing Wesfarmers paid $19.3 billion for Coles Group back in 2007 (issuing 308 shares at $45.73 in the purchase, and then a second issue at $13.50 in 2009 raising $2.8 billion (after $2.5 billion was raised in 2008 at $29 a share) both in the depths of the GFC slump, plus the write downs at Target and HomeBase of more than $3 billion, the total cost of the Coles adventure is probably well north of $30 billion.
It is very hard seeing that price being reached in the spin off."

Have they decided all that capital is in the wrong game, what with Aldi expanding, Lidl coming, Costco here and who knows what Amazon will do with Whole Foods.

This is all true but it might end up being too costly in other ways to stick with the franchise model.
What difficulties has it brought for Caltex that has led them to the costly decision to go back to company stores?

I would go for roofs. Rooves just doesn't sound right.

Cricket bats would need a sense of direction, which your average thug might be light on, as opposed to the baseball bat which could be wielded any which way

Not speaking from experience I hasten to add.

Not having held this for a good while, I'm not up with its performance.
But they keep telling us people are dropping insurance like hot cakes.
However I wonder if the people who are dropping out are the same cohort that use private hospitals the most.
I guess movements in bed occupancy rates would tell us that.
Anybody know?

I'm taking a punt at these prices.
To my way of thinking it's a case of desperate journos & a minority of disgruntled franchisees vs a business with a lot still going for it.
Hoping for a short term gain vs doing my dough.

I will say though, in mathematical terms, these are now infinitely more valuable than they were a few years ago, which was zero.

QUOTE
If that is the case I think that the best that we can do is identify when the system becomes unstable, not when that unstable system will collapse.

That's obviously true but not a lot of help when the system has been unstable for a good while. But at least if you're proactive-minded you can get out ahead of time and be content with short forays into the market till things clarify.
September/October/November seem to be favourite times for major crashes.

I have noticed over the years that SS tends to focus more on resources, energy, tech & healthcare stocks and very little on industrials and what I'd call mainstream stocks.
Not that there's anything wrong with that but it probably accounts for the slower traffic.
I have a fairly large range of watchlist stocks on another site and, while they get run from time to time, there are always stocks that attract focus beyond comprehension eg HML, currenrly not trading.
SLA haa been a long discussed stock here as have a few other specs. CUV, not so long, seems to be some kind if in-game. Whatever turns you on.

I don't like franchisors but there's a good stable of businesses here. So they've had a bit of a profit downgrade, who hasn't or will?
A lot of motivated franchisees out there and as long as the new guy can sort out any supply chain issues viz. Michelles, no reason the fundamentals won't restore the sp..
I don't see the demand going away.

This is quite a turnaround, from a low of 3.18 in February to a high of 3.80 today, though pulled back a bit.
So it's had an impetus from the announcement of proposed unfreeze of Medicare but that only came in recent days.
What accounts for the rest of it?

I would only comment that if you followed the primaries, as I did closely, Reuters & Bloomberg, but particularly Reuters, were among the most vociferous and active anti-Trump campaigners in the media. Not that they were Robinson Crusoes, but Reuters fairly blatantly altered their polling methodology to "correct" the results to a more palatable outcome.
Something about "leopards" and "spots".

With the number of spots I've had frozen, it would be good if they had a camera attached to the gas bottle that would transfer the picture to computer. Don't know how it works for excisions though, but will keep an eye on it. Not showing up on the Westpac system yet.

PS good luck with that one nipper.

Woolworths just can't seem to work out what they are good at and what they aren't. This is a mystery to me.

They're definitely no good at competing with Aldi on price. When they try to do it, they just look stupid & phoney because they don't actually get near the Aldi prices on those basic items like a box of milk. They're always a bit higher so what's the point of that?
They need to give that idea up.

What they're good at is (1) delivering a broad range of products Aldi can't supply without breaking their model and (2) delivering a better quality & range of fresh food products - meat, poultry, dairy, deli etc.

In their advertising they ought to be asking customers: can you get product X, Y, Z at Aldi ? and how does our meat range and our dairy range compare with Aldi? And then hammer home the message that it doesn't.

Can I have a fee for explaining this to them.

Ps I am however an Aldi shopper because I'm a bottom feeder, though I might be a Woolworths investor if this keeps up.

I've bought some again on the fall.
What's not to like? 45 hospitals pumping out procedures for baby boomers with money who increasingly need them.
The only threat to these hospital stocks is a govt change on the HIR, which forced me out of RHC under Gillard.

The stock market has no place for loyalty. Look at this - down from 2.96 at 30/8 to 2.43 today. Good results, no bad news, only good forecast, special div paid, never missed a div. Admittedly 2.96 was an artificial high.

Ah perfidious ASX, plunge thy dagger here.

Over the past few days I've been listening to some mp3 files of old jazz performances at Bird land in NY, including the Count Basie band from 1956, probably his best ever.
This morning I listened to Billie Holiday in Los Angeles 1945. Such a haunting voice.

A clean sheet for NEC. Everything hitherto irrelevant, maybe this too.

I am interested by Nine's digital diversification & its decision to ditch the Warner Bros trash and invest in some home-grown trash.
Not phased by the gloomy chart, why shouldn't a new one start from now.
Morningstar has undervalued and medium buy consensus on it.

5 years, that's a surprise nipper. Whenever I see the name RHC an involuntary Grrrr! passes my lips.
Fear drove me from this stock & sector back then while I could still take a substantial profit, as I thought.
Since then it became too pricey for me and I turned my attention to HSO.

They've got rid of the big millstone but at what a cost.
I don't see the fundamentals of their business getting better though unless they're willing to take an axe to their business model.
But I am not a holder and I'm probably biased.

There has been some insider buying here without a doubt.
sp gone from around 2.35 at 1/8 to 3.00 today. OK so the forecast was good but it didn't predict the 22c div incl special.
Doesn't bother me as a long term holder, except ethically.

As it obviously is not to your taste, as it isn't mine, for the sake of your blood pressure just don't look at or listen to anything on the ABC which might have a political context. Instead get your taxpayer value by viewing or listening to the many programs (although not as many as one could wish) which are apolitical.

So they've got the 9 network stuff in the south and TEN stuff in the regional north.

Triage, I think back about 50 years when I first applied for a mortgage.
I had 50% of the purchase price, a Treasury job and my wife was a teacher. The bank
manager scratched his head, patted his belly, adjusted his pince-nez and said "Ooh, I don't know".

But the lenders have since been fudging the numbers for about 30 years to my knowledge, with the odd break
for a financial crisis or two, but that is probably the very least of their sins. Not that I'll be selling my stock
you understand.

Prince who? Which royal family?

Beats me why they still get the lion's share of the big contracts, given their dubious history and their Spanish ownership.
Surely there are other, more Australian-owned companies, that should not be passed over. After all, once the contracts are secured they are mostly farmed out to a long line of sub-contractors of varying size.

I'm starting to wonder if my money would be better employed elsewhere than Westpac.
I have the advantage of having bought at the low during the GFC so its div return is good.
But if there's to be no more cap growth?
The question is, would I find the same yield (on cost, not market value) & security + cap growth in another sector.

I've noticed that a lot of companies have introduced this form of ann called "Dividend/Distribution" or something like that.
Don't know if it's a new ASX or ASIC requirement but I find it very useful.

The results look more than reasonable to me, but what would I know.
But it's a down day and a day of uncertainty and will not immediately provide the exit I thought possible.
That may be a good thing though, because it could instead show a steady growth as the market digests the results and the increased div.

This looks poised to go higher depending on results/div ann which should be out within a week.
If the results are reasonable, and depending on general market, I'd say it could top 52 week high which might provide for a nice exit.

Also it's got this govt review hanging in the breeze, but in an election year I can't really see a govt doing anything to

Elsewhere, the nation’s largest radiology firm is mulling a $1bn float, the AFR reports. The firm, backed by Sweden’s EQT, will likely raise $500 million through the listing.

Headlines often puzzle me as I scroll down. It's not unusual to find a couple issued within a short time of each other but with completely contradictory messages. And they will have come from the same agency.

Medibank is coming in for a fair amount of criticism from various quarters. Have the bean counters & financial modellers gained too much influence?
This from the AFR:

"The head of the doctors lobby, Brian Owler, says Medibank Private's hardball negotiating demands are offensive and misunderstand the motivations of health professionals.

Referring to the market-leading insurer's contract negotiation stoush with Catholic provider Calvary Health Care, the Australian Medical Association president said one of the 165 "highly preventable adverse events" that Medibank has said it will not pay for is maternal death associated with childbirth.

"Unfortunately, maternal death can and still does occur in a very small number of cases – as tragic as that is," he told the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday.

"Personally, however, I find it offensive that a private insurer would refuse to cover the costs of that patient and hospital in such a tragic event.

"If someone thinks that a financial incentive will motivate doctors, nurses or anyone else in a hospital to prevent maternal death any more than they desire to do so now, then they have no understanding of medicine or the people in it."

Any holders here been following the spat the fund has had with the Calvary Group?
How do you see this playing out in terms of membership and possible flow-on effects?

It might be looking neutral right now but I think (hope) it's showing signs that it will trend higher.
This has been a cyclical stock since I had anything to do with it and it might be time for a comeback.

I liked this article:

What was that song? "they did not listen then, perhaps they never will"

Decisions Decisions! As I see it, there is still a margin of advantage in buying SKE but the margin of advantage is narrowing.
Next point is the chart for PRG is not looking too bright, so a hold on it is not so attractive.
Maybe overall it's best to take a small profit on SKE but I'm still thinking there could be a longer term benefit.

Well maybe after all it's worth watching:

There's a good while to go in deciding how to make the best of this. My hope is the sp drops further in a Greek correction. That would be a win-win situation unless PRG were to change its terms, which is unlikely..

It's testing that $5 too often lately. Doesn't the market realise how many chronically ill old people there are out there?

Although I sold mine back when, I haven't sold some I bought in my daughter's name. Laziness? Ill-will?
Hope it might turn around in her life span? All of the above?

This ann about loss of franking credits due to tax refunds, coming on top of an ouzo-induced depression, has sent the chart
in a bit of a spin. Will need watching.

Actually, after looking at my chart & contrary to my comment on SKE, I think I'll keep the shares and maybe add to them as & when.

Obviously not much interest here for a while. I sold the last of mine in 2012 and made some good profits.
The chart may not be looking too healthy right now but I'm back in for a few, punting that it's now oversold and
the good times might come back. Always been a good business.

I find myself agreeing to some extent with everybody here.
On the one hand, there seems little doubt to me that ABC news/current affairs have a bias one way. To a smaller degree the same bias is imo present in Fairfax. That leaves the Murdoch press & one or two radio stations with a bias the other way.
It makes little difference to me, I don't watch or listen to those programs which are likely to annoy me.
But on the other hand, as I have said in some thread a while ago, I value a lot of ABC program podcasts as I do those from the BBC.
But in my 73rd year I value quality entertainment more than news, except business news which is largely non-political.
So what does annoy me about the ABC is my perception that they have allocated too many of their resources to news/current affairs at the expense of the quality entertainment/documentary programs that were aired in the past. For example, the BBC with all its cuts still manages to produce hours of radio drama every week. The ABC hasn't done that in decades. But I appreciate that they will always be outbid for quality drama & comedy from the UK.

I'll just conclude that, in terms of world news, I find more value nowadays in Mr Putin's Russia Today than I do just about anywhere else.
So what does that say about me?

To sell or not, that is the question.
Is SKE going to reach its Jan high or is it already overbought?

I'm baffled by this ATO decision allowing an immediate write off of the acquisition of medical practices.
The income tax law has obviously changed momentously since my day. What would only ever have been a capital expense
is now revenue expenditure.
PRY stand to gain $130-190 million in tax refunds. Doesn't matter what they do with it, the books will be healthier one way or another.

I very very nearly took a punt on this in the last couple of days on the basis of what the chart looked like, but fortunately what held me back was what I had been feeling about supermarket fundamentals for ages.
Today's ann plus the story out of Choice doesn't look good for this company.

Although I will add to that by saying there certainly looks to be a lot of competition in the health insurance business of late as the established funds and the newbies all vie to take bits of the same pie off each other.

I just looked at the Westpac chart I've been using and I can see it falling below the WMA but not much indication that there could be a bounce. As you say, it's only likely to be a thin profit margin if it does bounce.
Don't know what its fundamentals are.

It's all very disappointing. But I have to say, if you are mainly interested in the ASX200 or even mid-caps paying divs, SS hasn't been much of a forum for a long time. But just the same, I have picked up and continue to do so a lot of knowledge on trading from people like arty et al.
Not that HC is a lot better. I must have 30-40 stocks on my favourites and I look recently and it's wall to wall PEN (which is a distant prospect if that) or something similar. But at least smaller non-mining stocks do get a run amongst a few people.

Is there a breakout here? My simple understanding of the chart suggests it could be.
Of course this could be muddied by the Programmed speculation.

Just taken a profit it would have been better to have taken a month ago.

(PS The first time I've based decision on a chart)
