Just released.............

By a staff reporter

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has given preliminary approval for an alliance between airlines Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd and Etihad Airways.

The watchdog has granted interim authorisation of the deal, which allows the two airlines to prepare the initial stages of the alliance and to advertise it before the ACCC's final decision.

Long time between drinks for this topic - any way here is a good one for the CATTTLE CLASS passengers. Now atleast you can be close enough to whisper sweet things in the ear of the front passenger............pack those doggies in...........LOL

A NEW design for economy class airline seating gives a new meaning to the term "cattle class" - as passengers would sit on saddle-type seats, even closer to the person in front than now.

I think we might be heading towards the next war - CURRENCY:

FACING hostile Congressional questioning, US Treasury secretary Timothy Geithner pressed China to significantly boost the value of the yuan. Mr Geithner said China's move toward a flexible exchange rate was "too slow," but was reluctant to formally label Beijing a currency manipulator.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/n...x-1225925154845

AND another interesting read:

China has been forcing up the yen via record purchases of Japanese government bonds, leading Japan's government to intervene in currency markets this week. For the time being the US is not stepping into the brawl – but for how long?

Inflation talk again - so have we seen the top for now???????

Australian consumers expect prices to rise in September, reversing falls over the past four months, due to strong jobs and economic growth, a survey shows.

The Melbourne Institute survey of consumer inflationary expectations found the median expected inflation rate rose to 3.1 per cent in September, from 2.8 per cent in August.

Reuters

TOKYO - Japan has intervened in the currency market for the first time in six years, selling yen to stem a rise in the currency that is threatening a fragile economic recovery.

Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda confirmed the intervention in a news conference, saying Tokyo was also communicating with authorities overseas but indicating that Japan acted alone.

Economists at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. expect the Fed to announce as early as November a program of asset purchases to support a weak economy. Treasury purchases may total about $1 trillion in another round of quantitative easing, according to Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist for Goldman Sachs.

The New York-based firm correctly projected yields will slide in 2010 as the recovery faltered, and forecasts the 10- year note will end the year at 2.5 percent. Bloomberg News reported the Goldman Sachs estimate this week.

The 10-year Treasury note’s yield dropped seven basis points, or 0.07 percentage point, to 2.68 percent yesterday, according to BGCantor Market Data.

This is the chart of the U.S. 10 year Treasury - closed on it's highs of 2.76.

"The bond slipped after the auction results were distinctly bland, as the award rate had to back up to 3.82% to get the deal done with very average readings for the cover and indirect bid," said Action Economics.

The Royal Bank of Scotland believes interest in Treasurys was diluted by the large amount of corporate issuance recently.

Bonds had been in retreat since early Thursday as investors trimmed safe-haven positions after the Labor Department reported an improvement in the U.S. job market.

Mr Katter said Opposition Leader Tony Abbott had pledged to support more of the policies contained in his 20-point plan than Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

BHP Billiton Ltd is reportedly actively working on a major oil and gas buy, which industry sources suggest could be Anadarko Petroleum Corporation.

BHP, which recently launched a hostile $44 billion bid for Potash Corp, had explored a joint $45 billion takeover of Woodside Petroleum Ltd with Royal Dutch Shell, according to The Australian.

Chinese and other investors have approached at least one big Canadian pension manager about a bid for Canada's Potash Corp to rival BHP Billiton's $43 billion hostile offer.

Just out..........

By a staff reporter, with Reuters

Australia recorded a trade surplus of about $1.9 billion in July, well below economists' forecasts, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The balance on goods and services totalled $1.88 billion during the month, down from June's revised surplus of $3.44 billion.

Mate, I have NO idea where the market is going to - yesterday the sky was falling, today everything is all rosy (maybe it has something to do with the start of spring), tomorrow could be the sky is falling again, etc, etc. The U.S. is still the 400 pound bear..........

Maybe this is also boosting sentiments, dunno...............

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - U.S. President Barack Obama formally declared the end of the combat mission in Iraq late Tuesday, saying in a speech delivered from the Oval Office that it was time to turn to domestic concerns like the economy. "Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country," Obama said.

Tough question mate - today we've had a couple of positive data released giving the market a boost:

1. Australia's GDP rose 1.2% seasonally adjusted, bringing the annual growth to a healthy 3.3%;
2. China's PMI for August was 51.7

So, all we need now is for the U.S. to get it's act together - a bit of a short squeeze at the moment, so who knows what tomorrow will bring...................maybe, some one else will have a more smarter answer??????????

Australian gross domestic produce (GDP) rose 1.2 per cent in the June quarter, slightly above expectations.

The growth followed a 0.5 per cent increase in the March quarter, and brought annual growth to 3.3 per cent.

These are extracts from THE AGE this morning.........it seems like that CFE would get all the spoils from any settlement from MMX, maybe shows that CFE knew what they were doing with their investment...

International Litigation Partners of Singapore had been funding Chameleon's Federal Court battle with Murchison Metals - which is yet to be decided.

The new deal also meant Cape Lambert would give Chameleon $6.5 million to discharge ILP. Chameleon then refused to pay ILP their agreed termination fee of the higher of $9 million or 20 per cent of the Chameleon share capital, arguing ILP could not enforce that because it did not hold an Australian financial services licence.

NSW Supreme Court Justice David Hammerschlag ruled yesterday ILP should receive the termination fee, but not a share of any spoils from the Murchison settlement.

He said the funder's decision and power to appoint receivers over Chameleon was valid.

One event today to keep an eye on I reckon.............

The Bank of Japan will hold an emergency board meeting today as the yen’s surge to a 15-year high forces policy makers to find ways to support the nation’s slowing expansion.

Governor Masaaki Shirakawa and his board will gather at 9 a.m. “to discuss monetary control matters based on recent economic and financial developments,” the central bank said in a statement today. Shirakawa returned to Tokyo yesterday, cutting short a U.S. trip by one day after Prime Minister Naoto Kan said he expected the bank to implement policy “swiftly.”

A bit of an interesting read................

<h3 class="byline">By Steven Russolillo</h3>

Two weeks have passed since the Hindenburg Omen was initially triggered and stocks continue to drop, closing below the key 10000 level Thursday.

The Dow is down 3.2% since the Omen was first triggered on Aug. 12. As avid Marketbeat readers know, the indicator’s creator Jim Miekka is looking for a 20% drop by approximately the end of September, so time will tell if his “omen” will come to fruition.

This could be a worry for BHP..............

Aug. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Ian Henderson, manager of $7 billion in resource assets at JPMorgan Chase & Co., said China may bid for Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc., after a $40 billion BHP Billiton Ltd. offer, while a Brazilian proposal is less likely.

China is “dependent upon potash exports so they are a big customer of Potash Corp.,” Henderson, who manages mining stocks including BHP and Brazil’s Vale SA, said today on Bloomberg Television’s ‘The Pulse with Andrea Catherwood.’ “Brazil does have its own potash reserves and these can be developed and I think Vale is increasing their own production plans already.”

BHP chair Jac Nasser faces an uphill task in winning shareholder support for the proposed $US43 billion bid for Potash Corp. The company’s stock is down some five per cent this week against a flat market.

The reason is simple: The deal on paper is value destructive and according to Credit Suisse will not be value accretive until at least year three.

Looks like a drop today..............

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc., the world’s largest fertilizer producer, rose the most in two decades after it rejected a $39 billion takeover offer from BHP Billiton Ltd., prompting industry speculation of a higher bid.

I have been to the DFO at Homebush quite a few times and on every occasion the centre has been packed to the rafters with shoppers, all carrying shopping bags and buying. Always very, very busy...............

Massive debts crippling Melbourne's South Wharf Direct Factory Outlets (DFO) complex could see receivers called in by this afternoon, sources say.

Developer Austexx – which runs the South Wharf complex at Melbourne's Docklands precinct – is understood to owe debts of more than $400 million to banks and in excess of $100 million to other debtors.

China cut its holdings of Treasury notes and bonds by the most ever, raising speculation a plunge in U.S. yields has made government securities unattractive.

The nation’s holdings of long-term Treasuries fell in June for the first time in 15 months, dropping by $21.2 billion to $839.7 billion, a U.S. government report showed yesterday. Two- year yields headed for a fifth monthly decline in August, falling today to a record 0.48 percent.

Chameleon Mining says it expects its receivership, brought about by its litigation funder, will be lifted next week in a Supreme Court decision.

The Singapore-based International Litigation Partners moved to appoint an insolvency firm as external receiver to Chameleon.

A Chameleon spokesman said ILP had alleged the mineral explorer had breached the terms of a $20 million fixed and floating charge secured by ILP over Chameleon last year, which prevented the Sydney-based Chameleon from granting security over its assets to a third party.

Chameleon had allegedly committed the breach on Tuesday when it entered into a deal with Cape Lambert Resources.

JULY JOBLESS RATE RISES TO 5.3%..........

Australia's unemployment rate rose to 5.3% in July amid conflicting signals about the strength of the economy.

The jobless rate rose from the previous month's 5.1 per cent last month, which was unchanged from the previous month, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Analysts had expected a flat result.

The news sent the dollar lower.

delayedAds.push(function(){ FD.addExternalReferralsAd($merge(FD.baseAd, { id: "adspot-300x250-pos-3", iframeId: "adspot-300x250-pos-3-iframe", params: $merge($merge(FD.baseAd.params, { pos: 3, aamsz : "300x250" }),getAdParams("300x250")) ,addSmall: true ,smallText: "Advertisement: Story continues below" }) ); } ); Australia's labour market remains one of the bright spots in an economic recovery that remains patchy. Today's jobs figures are the last major economic indicators before Australians go to the polls on August 21.
