Well, it sounds like a bloodbath any way you approach it. Guess you could sell half on Dec. 31st and the other half January, at least break the income up over a two year period.

Yes, you are right essentially in your understanding. But, when it comes to execution, I'd seek out a tax advisor.

If you have no other sources of income, your first $38,700 in capital gains is tax free. Double that if you're married.

Keep in mind that capital gains ARE income. If you have 500k in gains, you're in the highest tax bracket.

Wouldn't your income be the gains you realize for that year, then your bracketed accordingly, then you pay your capital gains tax based on that?

Any tax gurus in the house? biggrin.gif I've never been in the situation, so I will play out a scenario here. It seems as though your % of capital gains is tied to your income. My tax bracket is 22%, so my long term capital gain is 15%, but if you have little or no income, the capital gains rate is 0%. Suppose my investment in Clinuvel is enough to retire on and I quit my job on Dec. 31st and then sell my shares, say January 1st. Since I wont be working that year, I would have no/little income, would not my capital gains be 0% in the year that I sold?? Or maybe my thinking is all messed up.

Derp. Sorry that’s obviously % change relative to closing price on day -1 (one day before announcement)

Been playing with the ASX300 additions from the last two years (i.e. March 2016, Sept 2016, March 2017, Sept 2017, March 2018). While there are outliers in the set, the effect is pretty obvious. Looking forward to the increased visibility and buying pressure from index funds.

EDIT: Day 0 is the day of announcement for inclusion in the ASX300, trading days only (for obvious reasons)
