Woolworths chief executive Brad Banducci has acknowledged the looming threat of Amazon launching in Australia warning it is a "material competitor".

 

Mr Banducci was pressed by the ABC on Amazon's disruptive potential for traditional retailers as the online giant prepares to unleash in Australia later this year.

 

"Amazon is obviously a very material potential competitor in this space," Mr Banducci said. "Customers are looking for a lot more convenience in the way they shop. Amazon and many others are of course going to provide that convenience if we don't."

Just heard an interview of Roger Montgomery from a couple of days ago and in that interview he said that something like 80% of the major product lines sold in Rebel Sports outlets are already listed on Amazon. Rebel is part of Super Retail Group's stable of retail outlets (SUL). If I were looking for a major retailer that will be hit for six by the arrival of Amazon then I would be looking at SUL.

 

(I see they also have BCF. I know a bloke who is a fanatic fisherman and he sees BCF as akin to the antichrist [something to do with prices and product range]. Again, I think Amazon and its ilk will do material damage to the niche BCF is attempting to fill).

Aldi's fresh food offer puts heat on Woolworths and Coles

Aldi's billion-dollar fresh food facelift for its supermarkets is reaping benefits, accelerating its market share growth against Coles and Woolworths and giving it more pricing firepower.

 

That's the view of Morgan Stanley analysts who say Aldi's new store format, which its started rolling out in 2016 and increases floor space dedicated to fresh food from 15 per cent to 25 per cent, had been a "game changer".

 

Refurbishments have been completed at 50 stores to date, which had seen shopper traffic increase 7 to 8 per cent and basket size (how much each shopper bought) grow about 6 to 7 per cent, implying a 13 to 15 per cent uplift in sales, analyst Thomas Kierath said in a note to clients based largely off discussions with industry expert and former senior Aldi executive Paul Foley

 

Mr Kierath said the new store format would boost Aldi's encroachment on Coles and Woolworth's market share by about 30 basis points a year, and that the proceeds of the extra sales could be funnelled into further price cutting.

In fact both mount a real case that its fear and loathing and nothing more - that the reality for Amazon is much tougher than popular opinion credit.

In the same could be said about Australia where Woolworths, Coles and Metcash, face more danger from Aldi and Costco than they will from Amazon. Add in Aldi and the quartet are selling around $A110 billion of grocery and associated products (such as alcohol) a year, which is considerably more than Amazon alone was doing in the US and will sell now that it owns Whole Foods.

Not all book stores have been driven out of business by Amazon (though iTunes and now music streaming have damaged music retailers. Now some radio stations are trying to match the streaming services).

 

The BCA comes to similar conclusions. i reckon this article is some what misleading.......

a lot of us here whom remember AMZN from dot come year 2000 era , one thing that impressed most of us is AMZN can burn it's cash with big amount and really longer duration

if AMZN comes aussie then it will start price war that will hit EVERYONE , it just matter of more or less.

the price war will bring down the profit margin-----that is the basic.

Perhaps we are reading the effect on Woolies of Amazon's entry into the Australian market all wrong.

 

I see that Toys 'R' Us, which has 1400 big box stores around the world, may soon file for bankruptcy, in part due to the impact of online sellers like Amazon on its sales. I would think that toys would be an ideal niche to be attacked by online sellers: in each age group there are a small number of dominant brands that would account for the bulk of toy sales so buyers can easily go online and see which outlet is offering the cheapest prices, and having a large shopfront presence - our local Toys 'R' Us is in a Westfield mall - likely means you are not price competitive with online operators.

I am old enough to remember that the entry of Toys 'R' Us into the Australian market was our first exposure to big box category killers. Its entry was not only the death knell for most independently owned toy shops spread around suburban and regional shopping centres it was also a kidney punch to the likes of Big W, Target and K Mart. Why shop at Big W that has some of this and a bit of that when you could go to Toys 'R' Us and have a full range at similar prices to what the discount chains were offering.

 

If Amazon and its ilk kill off big box specialists like Toys 'R' Us then maybe that would provide some clean air to chains like Big W and Woolies. It's a bit like the line that you don't have to run faster than the crocodile chasing you, you only have to run faster than the person beside you. By the looks of it Toys 'R' Us may be a slow runner.

 

Actually, I don't put much weight to the notion that the arrival of Amazon will be good news for WOW but if I were a Woolies executive that would be an avenue I'd want to explore.

It's a complex issue. My biggest gripe with these dinosaur retailers is they don't give me a reason to use them. Target/Kmart... Pfft, I walk in, see it's all plastic, asian assembled, low cost junk and walk out. I get reams of catalogues in the mail... As a small business owner, I know the you have 0.7 seconds to grab a humans interest from advertising... these catalogues, again, junk. On the odd time I do flick through one it's followed with 'what a load of #$%^'.

 

It doesn't make me visit their website, let alone get dressed, hop in the car, fight traffic, get a park, then fight mums and prams to get into their shop.

 

No ambience, no loyalty schemes, no birthday bonuses...nothing. Just here's our junk, come pay for it. I'm not sure they actually understand they aren't entitled to my business or money.....

 

and they wonder why sales are drying up.

 

Amazon is an interesting one, AFAIK, the retailing arm ie. Amazon.com, still barely eeks out a profit (a lot of profit's from AWS etc), so it's all just a race to the bottom. No company survives on being the cheapest.

 

Maybe it's not amazon that's killing it, but that retail has simply positioned itself in a race to the bottom. Wise marketer's know price is not a competitive advantage.

 

Maybe I'm just getting older, and see the world for what it appears to be: A rich few forcing consumerism on the masses.
