Jamie Pherous's decision to build his Brisbane-based Corporate Travel Management business into a global concern appears to be paying off with the company reporting a 14 per cent jump in revenue on the back of a 19 per cent increase in total transaction values for the year to June 30.

 

TTV for the company, which operates across Australia, New Zealand, North America, Asia and Europe, hit nearly $5 billion during the year, while net profit after tax was up 41 per cent to $76.7 million as the company continued to expand via increased market share.

 

"These results support the strategy that we have taken to build a global network," Mr Pherous said yesterday.

 

Corporate Travel Management's decision to grow market share helped it post underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $125.4m, up 27 per cent on the previous year.

 

Mr Pherous said organic growth contributed about $19m towards profit growth, adding that in terms of regions Australia, New Zealand and Europe were the top performers.

 

"In Australia, we have 15 per cent of the market, and we have more than $1bn worth of sales in every region," he said.

 

Mr Pherous declined to comment on his clients' identity but said that as the world's sixth-largest travel manager "you can appreciate there are some blue chip private, public and government clients".

 

"We have at least 100 global clients who use us in more than one region."

 

While he is always scouring the market for more acquisitions, Mr Pherous said he expected "relatively flat client activity globally" for 2018-19..

The company is paying a dividend of 36c, up 20 per cent.

Travel was always a fractured industry, and it wasn't a long time ago, 5 yrs or a bit more, that CTD was one of a myriad players. Ranked 60 when they pushed into US, I seem to remember, in a vast unconsolidated field. Had an app that no-one seemed to like (and always that grab for the full accounts - back office, receipts, booking hierarchies - wasn't going to be handed over by clients' bean-counters. But CTD seems to have scaled up, and managed 'growth by acquisition' better than most.

Among the 20 "red flags" VGI has raised are allegations that its cash flows are at odds with its claims of strong organic growth, that senior managers have been selling company shares and that it did not fully disclose the impact of revised revenue figures.

 

VGI said that it also found no sign of activity when it visited CTM's offices, as listed on its website, in Glasgow, Paris, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Switzerland, while about a quarter of its offices in the United States were either operating with skeleton staff or where unused.

 

CTM said it was taking the claims seriously but would not comment further on Monday.

CTD became aware of a 52 page report prepared by VGI Partners last night, six days following

It is CTD's initial view that VGI Partners' further report raises no substantive new issues but

it is not possible for CTD to fully review the further report or comprehensively respond by the time

the market opens today. CTD is therefore requesting a trading halt so that the company is able to

Last week CTM engaged EY to provide ongoing support to CTM, assess certain matters relating to CTMÃÆâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’ƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¡Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¬ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¾Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢s

financial statements for FY18 and subsequently to respond to certain matters raised by VGI and its

continuing attempts to discredit CTM's financial disclosures, notwithstanding CTM's detailed response to

VGI's report. EYÃÆâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’ƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¡Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¬ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¾Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢s engagement with CTM is continuing.

 

CTM engaged EY specifically because of its experience in the travel sector. EY is the auditor of Flight

Centre (ASX:FLT) and auditor and advisor to other global travel sector participants, and has a deep

understanding of not only the travel sector (including the timing of supplier (airline and rail) payments

and their relationship with receivables), but also the difference between the corporate and leisure

sectors. CTM notes its own auditor, PWC, is also the auditor of Helloworld (ASX:HLO) and was the auditor

of Hogg Robinson Group (HRG) before HRG was acquired by American Express Global Business Travel

(GBT).

 

EY has provided CTM with its preliminary observations with respect to certain issues raised by VGI and

notes that VGIÃÆâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’ƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¡Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¬ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¾Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢s report is superficial. EYÃÆâ€â„¢ÃƒÆ’ƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¡Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¬ÃƒÆ’¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¬ÃƒÆ’…¾Ãƒâہ¡ÃƒÆ’‚¢s preliminary observations are reflected in the attached release,
