Profit fears hit US stocks

In New York, US stocks tumbled, with technology shares leading the retreat, as fears about slowing growth in corporate profits overshadowed favourable news from Motorola Inc and Microsoft Corp.

 

The technology-dominated Nasdaq Composite Index, which had rallied on Tuesday, fell more than two per cent, recording its biggest one-day percentage loss in more than four months and its lowest close in nine months.

 

Solid results from conglomerate United Technologies Corp and others held up the blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average for much of the day, but the Dow fell into negative territory in a late-day flurry of selling.

 

The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index fell 42.70 points or 2.23 per cent to 1874.37, its lowest close since Oct 24, 2003. It posted its biggest percentage loss since March 15.

 

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 102.94 points or 1.01 per cent to 10,046.13, its lowest close since May 24. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 14.79 points or 1.33 per cent, to 1093.88, its lowest close since May 21.

 

 

Trading was heavy, with about 1.7 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange and 2.1 billion shares on Nasdaq.

i'd say there might be some bargains around today, particularly with some oil and gas stocks being sold down in the general malaise. I'd pick TAP and ROC as the outstanding contenders.

There's an overreaction in the resource sector today. Sure weaker base metal prices overnight, but the aussie dollar got a pummelling.

The Aussie dollar fell more than 2%

 

Resources should bounce back this afternoon.

Dow up 123 points; best one-day gain since early June

 

 

Wall Street barreled out of its slump Tuesday, soaring in response to a solid consumer confidence reading and a strong earnings outlook from Verizon Communications. The Dow Jones industrials gained more than 120 points, springing back above 10,000.

Might see a retest of 10000 area support ... maybe even back to 9940

 

Soo glad we have the AUS market ... as compared to the US ... its performing so much better. Wouldn't be surprised that quite a bit of foreign investment is kicking the Aus along at the moment.
